余計なお世話だ_c0130312_2051366.jpg

本日のことわざ

MIND YOUR OWN BEESWAX

直訳は「あなたの蜜蝋のことを気にしなさいよ」

英和辞典の訳は「よけいなお世話だ」

[beeswax]は[business]の代用。

[ mind your own business] [ Mind your own affairs , not mine] とも言う。

このことわざの起源はアメリカの植民地時代までさかのぼります。

当時、「beeswax(蜜蝋)」は蝋燭を作るために利用されていました。

女性たちは火のそばで蝋燭を作るために蝋を混ぜていました。

火のそばで仕事するので、自分のドレスや髪の毛に火が燃え移らないように、用心しなければなりませんでした。

 誰かが人のやっている仕事に口出しすると、彼女たちは、

「mind your own beeswax] といいました。

もう一つ、ヨーロッパ起源の話があります。当時の女性は肌をなめらかに保つために

顔に 蜜蝋をぬっていました。

蜜蝋パックをしたまま火のそばに近づきすぎると、とけてきます。

「あの子の顔、溶けだしてるなぁ」なんて人の顔ばかり見ていると、別の女性から

「mind your own beeswax] といわれます。

Actually this saying has nothing at all to do with beeswax ・beeswax in this case is a substitute for the word business・ So the meaning of this saying actually is mind your own business・ or mind your own affairs, not mine・

This phrase may actually extend back as far as the colonial period in the United States. At that time beeswax was used a lot in the making of candles. Women would stand next to the fire stirring wax to make candles together. They had to be very careful not to let the wax or fire burn their huge dresses or hair. So when someone would comment on the job another was doing, they used the phrase mind your own bees wax.

There is another story however which goes back even further in history to Europe, where women used beeswax on their faces to smooth their skin. If they stayed too close to a fire, for example, the heat on their faces would start to melt. At times it might be noticed by one woman that another woman was staring at her, and she would say mind your own beeswax・
