イーディッシュ語

イーディッシュ語というのは、中欧地域の言葉で、ドイツ語とヘブライ語、スラブ語が混ざった言葉です。
中欧地域に住んでいたユダヤ人の間で話されている言葉です。
19世紀後半から20世紀初頭にかけ、イーディッシュ語がニューヨークに入ってきました。
イーディッシュ語は、今、アメリカ人は日常会話の中で頻繁に使っています。
英語を勉強している皆さん、イーディッシュ語は知ってたほうがいいかも。
First of all, Yiddish is a mid-European language, a combination of Hebrew, German, and other Slavic languages, common to Jewish people in that area and brought to the United States, particularly New York in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Bubkes : 全く何にもない。
(also spelled bupkis) means emphatically nothing, as in "he isn't worth bubkes" or "he worked hard all his life and what did he have to show for it at the end? Bubkes!"
Chutzpah : ガッツ、根性、大胆不敵
pronounced more like "hutzpah", meaning guts, daring, and audacity!
Glitch : ちょっとした故障 (a minor malfunction)
Kibitz : 1. トランプやチェスをしている人に役に立たないアドバイスをすること
2. ゴシップやどうでもいいような会話をすること。
meaning to offer or give unwanted advice, like to someone playing cards or chess. It also means to converse idly or even gossip, which gives us the word "kibitzer".
Klutz :不器用な人(a clumsy person)
Kosher : 本物、真実
originally meaning that something conformed to special Jewish dietary laws, it came to mean something that is appropriate or legitimate, or true.
Kvetch : 不平不満、グチばかりこぼしている人
meaning to complain habitually, gripe, or a person who continually complains about everything.
Lox : スモークサーモン
smoked salmon (very very tasty! Great for sushi!)
Maven : 専門家 (an expert, or an understanding person)
Mazel Tov : おめでとう
congratulations, good fortune. A toast!(乾杯!)
Megillah : 長くて退屈な(一方的な)会話
a tedious, long, detailed discourse (one sided conversation), as in "He told (or gave) me the whole mageillah"
Mensch :礼儀正しく正直な人
an upright, honest, decent human being
Meshuga : バカ、狂人
crazy or nuts. As in "Hey, stop! You're driving me meshuga!!!!"
Meshuggener : 変わり者、変人、馬鹿者
a crazy or nuts person. As in, Oh, Mrs, Yamato is a meshuggener!"
Nosh : スナックをたべる
a snack, to eat a snack, or to munch!(モグモグ食べる)
Oy! : Oh, So, Well などの間投詞
also "oy vey"; an interjection meaing "well?" "so?" " Oh!" or "Oh, jeeze!"
Putz :バカ、トンマ、マヌケ
an idiot or jerk. "Mr. Jones is such a putz!"
Schlemiel :無能(an inept), 不器用(clumsy person; a bungler),
能なし( a moron!)
Schlep : 重たい物を引きずって運ぶ
to drag or haul something (an object) or to make a tedious journey. As in, "All day long I schlepped around with all of Mrs. Ito's packages!"
Schlock : 安っぽい、見せかけの、低俗な人(物)
something or someone that is cheap, shoddy, vulgar, inferior.

Schmaltz - or schmaltzy :ものすごく感傷的な言動、人物
something or someone with a lot of sentimentality
Schmeer (also schmear) :広げる、薄く塗る
a verb meaning to spread, as in to "schmeer some cream cheese onto a piece of toast
Schmo : 愚か者
a stupid person as in "She is such a schmo!!!"
Schmooze : おしゃべり
means to converse informally, to make small talk or to chat
Schmuck :愚かな人、
a contemptible or foolish person, a jerk!
Schmutz (pronounced schmoooootz):汚れ
dirt, as in "You've got some schmutz on your cheek!"
Schnook : 気の毒な、大人しい、だまされやすい人
a pitiful, meek, or gullible person as in "Oy! You poor schnook!"
Schnoz : 大きな鼻
a nose, particularly a big nose (which does not happen in Japan so much!)
Shamus :刑事、警官
a detective or cop (actually came from the Irish name Seamus, because most cops in New York were Irish)
バカとかマヌケとか、悪い言葉が多くてゴメンナサイ。でも、これ結構頻繁に使ってるんですよね。悪い言葉ほど早くおぼえるのは子どもも大人も同じかな。
